Do the Weather Clocks really forecast the Weather?!
They do, indeed!
The clock has a barometric air pressure sensor at its core that continually measures the atmospheric air pressure throughout the day.
Even inside a relatively air-tight home the air pressure changes are sufficient for your clock to forecast from as you will see.
By monitoring the air pressure, the clock can tell whether it is rising or falling in relative terms over time – an important aspect of weather forecasting. (See the following section for further details.)
Very simply, if the clock notices the air pressure is rising then it will forecast sunnier weather. Conversely, if air pressure falls then the clock will forecast rain. The faster the rate of change, the more extreme the swing in either direction.
For a video explanation by Bramwell Brown's Co-Founder, Rob, click here. You might also like to read the Instruction Manual that comes with every Weather Clock.
How often do the Weather Clocks move to a different weather forecast?
As the forecasts are determined purely by changes in atmospheric pressure, how often the clock moves to a different forecast is governed by how much the air pressure is fluctuating. On some days you may see the clock change several times and at other times it's not unusual for the clock to not move at all for several days. This simply reflects that the air pressure is remaining steady - as is the case in stable anticyclonic conditions.
How far ahead do the Weather Clocks forecast?
The clocks generally forecast short term for the day ahead, however, this does depend on a few things.
For example, if the air pressure falls really fast it would make a clock move to 'Rain' or even 'Stormy' (!) as rain is likely in the immediate hour or so. This area of low pressure might, however, be really big and/or slow moving - and so giving us all quite bad weather for several days. In such instances, the 'Rain' prediction is (although unknowingly) a longer term outlook.
Similarly, in times of high pressure, a clock would be expected to display 'Fair' or occasionally 'Very Dry' meaning that the outlook is good for that day. Quite often, though, these high pressure systems (anti-cyclones) stick around for a while and so it would not be unusual for the same forecast to remain for several days.
In addition, the clocks are sensitive enough to also notice smaller 'bumps' in air pressure. We occasionally see at BB HQ, single showers being picked up by the clocks. The pressure will drop slightly, it'll go dark outside as the rain cloud approaches, and then halfway through the shower, the clock will change back to fair, well in time for the end of the shower and the sky to clear! Sometimes it even just picks up single clouds that might only be on the verge of raining.
Do the Weather Clocks make a ticking noise?
We often get asked this but are pleased to say that, no, they do not make a ticking noise.
The Weather Clocks do, however, make a whirring or burbling sound for a second or two each time the weather forecast is updated. Most people like this as it means the changes get noticed as they happen (and children get very excited!) but would be why we don't recommend hanging a clock in a bedroom as they can change forecast any time of day or night!
Remind me what a Barometer is again?
A Barometer is an instrument that measures atmospheric pressure and, accordingly, helps forecast the weather. They've been around for quite some time....
The story starts in the 16th Century when Italian clever-man Evangelista Torricelli is thought to have been the first person to recognise that the world’s atmosphere was not weightless but applied a force, now known as atmospheric pressure.
Only in the 18th Century was the link between atmospheric pressure and changing weather conditions noted. Water-filled “storm glass” barometers did what their name suggests and predicted impending storms.
The 19th century saw the development of the aneroid barometer which became widely used for meteorology and a popular accessory in the home. These aneroid barometers were produced in all manner of ornate designs in response to the insatiable British appetite for a topic of conversation, the use of umbrellas and organising picnics.
With the advent of improved satellite weather forecasting, barometers became more regarded as an instrument for an older generation with their natural interactions overshadowed in an ever digitalised world. Your new Weather Clock is a reaction against this and a celebration of the intricate mechanics of bygone eras brought up to date for the contemporary home.
How does temperature affect the Weather Clocks?
One thing to remember here is that barometers measure air pressure. The Weather Clocks' forecasting is not at all affected by the temperature outside.
The only point we ask you to remember is that the clocks' internal mechanics are not likely to be very happy if hung very close above a hot radiator (or other powerful heat source) as the regular swings in temperature can affect the internal mechanism.
Whilst our instruction manuals request you don't hang your clock anywhere near a radiator, recent tests we've conducted show that the clocks are fine if you keep at least 50cm (20 inches) distance between the radiator and the clock frame.
How do the Weather Clocks work indoors?
Like older aneroid or mercury barometers, our Weather Clocks are made to hang on internal walls. When the atmospheric pressure changes outside, unless you happen to live in a nuclear bunker (!) - or another type of hermetically sealed home - the air pressure will also change to the same extent indoors.
So, like your grandfather's barometer he might have tapped everyday in the hallway, you can be happy that your own Weather Clock will pick up the natural changes in atmospheric pressure whilst inside your home.
Can I order a bespoke clock or finish of a clock that's not listed on the website?
In most cases, certainly! We'd be very happy to discuss your ideas. The workshop team would assist in setting up any special requests and their bespoke pricing.
Simply contact us here to tell us exactly what it is you're after.
What are the Weather Clocks powered by?
The mechanical scenery inside the clocks are powered by standard 'off-the-shelf' D-Cell batteries. These might need replacing after perhaps a couple years' of use, depending on how much the 'demonstration button' on the bottom of the clock is pressed.
The clock hands are kept moving (with no loud ticking!) by a standard AA battery, also inserted in the back of the clock.
All the batteries you need are, of course, included with the clock when delivered.
Where is it best to position a Weather Clock?
There are no specific requirements for where is best to position a Weather Clock. Traditional Barometers were often hung in hallways or other draughty rooms so that they picked up the outdoor changes in air pressure as soon as possible. Whilst this logic still works for the Weather Clocks, there's no inherent need to do this and we really just say that the clocks can go in any room where it will give you most pleasure to see it change!
The only two nuances to this would be:
- We recommend that the clocks are not hung closer than 50cm above or by a radiator (or other heat/steam source) where the heat/steam will rise directly into the clock. (N.B - your clock instruction manual may sound stricter than this more recent distance guidance.)
- The clocks can change weather forecast at any time of day or night. And the little burble the clocks make when moving might wake you if one was hung by your bed!
Can the clocks be hung outside?
The Weather and Tide Clocks are designed to be hung in the home and, as such, can't be hung outside and open to the elements. We may make Weather Clocks but they're not Weatherproof!
Does altitude affect the accuracy of the Weather Clocks' forecasting?
Yes it does. As atmospheric pressure is lower at altitude, if a Weather Clock is used at a significant elevation above sea level, its forecasts will be more pessimistic. It would be more frequently forecasting 'Rain' or 'Stormy' weather than might be accurate.
We would expect a clock to start to be a little confused by elevations of over 180m (590ft), although if you're living in the UK, you are likely to be lower than that. You can easily check the elevation of your location at this website (not associated with Bramwell Brown!)
If you live in the mountains or anywhere above 180m (590ft), we can help and it's best to flag this to us before you place an order. We just need to program your clock for suitable elevation. Please contact us here to discuss.
Do you make 'Giant-sized' (53cm/20.8") Copper-framed clocks?
Unfortunately, we can only source Regular-sized (33cm / 13") Copper frames for our clocks. We have regularly made attempts to change this but it has never been manageable for the workshop team and our Giant Clock part suppliers.
We can, though, offer our Giant Weather Clocks (deliverable to Mainland UK only) in a Bespoke Colour Frame with any* RAL Colour of your choosing. You can read more on this page and order on this page by selecting "Bespoke RAL" as the colour in the drop down box. These are very special clocks!
Do the Copper-plated framed clocks tarnish at all?
Bramwell Brown's Copper-plated Clocks have a lacquered finish applied to them. So their beautiful finish doesn't need any polishing or further protection to prevent it tarnishing after handling or exposure to moisture. They just stay as lovely as they are when unpacked from their boxes.
How do you hang the clocks?
Our clocks come with handy templates inside the box to help you hang the clock when you unpack it.
And we also made a video instructions of how to hang your clock that you might like to watch.
Our Tide Clocks are hung in exactly the same way.
For even further reference, the below links are downloadable templates with instructions.

I have a question that is not answered here. How can I get in touch?
If you have question about our clocks or a potential order that is not answered here, then please reach out to us here. A member of the team will be on hand to help as soon as possible. We can't offer a telephone enquiry service but, by contacting us via the website, we do guarantee you a swift and helpful response.
How do the Tide Clocks work?
Like all other available Tide Clocks on the market, the Bramwell Brown Tide Clock moves on a "semi-diurnal" mechanism.
This means that it works by timing the Moon’s orbit around the Earth (which takes 24 hours, 50 minutes and 30 seconds), and therefore the gravitational force behind the twice daily rise and fall of a standard semi-diurnal tide.
This natural and regular tidal pattern is shown here.
By following these average timings, the Tide Clock will be able to indicate to you how many hours until the next high or low tide.
To set the Tide Clock, you just need to either turn it on when it is high tide in your preferred location (or hold down the demonstration button to move the scenery to high tide).
You therefore don’t need to be anywhere near the sea for the Tide Clock to work and tell you the tidal heights at your favourite beach, harbour or stretch of coastline.
Want to watch a video explaining all of the above? Click here.
What harbour is depicted in the Tide Clock?
The image by our artist, Peter McDermott, is loosely based on the harbour of Crail in Scotland.
Do the Tide Clocks make a ticking noise?
We often get asked this but are pleased to say that, no, they do not make a ticking noise.
The Weather Clocks do, however, make a whirring or burbling sound for a second or two each time the weather forecast is updated. Most people like this as it means the changes get noticed as they happen (and children get very excited!) but would be why we don't recommend hanging a clock in a bedroom as they can change forecast any time of day or night!
The Tide Clocks also 'burble' quickly every 30 minutes to update the tide scenery's height. This, again, can be not appropriate in a bedroom setting but absolutely fine in a living area.
Will a Tide Clock work in the Solent strait, southern England?
The tides in the Solent are unusual as a result of the tidal flow being squeezed within the confines of the English Channel. Southampton, for example, has a “double high water” and the tidal curves seen in the area are more complicated than a standard semi-diurnal curve.
However, the twice daily oscillation of high and low tide that is caused by the gravitational pull of the moon (semi-diurnal) is still present and there is still a regular average of approximately 12 hours and 25 minutes between one High Water and the next.
So, yes, a Bramwell Brown Tide Clock will still follow the main peaks and troughs in the tidal curve. It cannot, however, reflect the more uneven ebb and flow patterns either side of Low and High Water.
Where is it best to position a Tide Clock
- We recommend that our clocks are not hung closer than 50cm above or by a radiator (or other heat/steam source) where the heat/steam will rise directly into the clock. (N.B. your clock instruction manual may sound stricter than this more recent distance guidance.)
- The clock will move its harbour scenery regularly (and makes a momentary noise while it does so) and has a flashing LED within the pictured lighthouse. For these reasons we recommend not hanging a Tide Clock in a bedroom.
- Our clocks are not suitable for hanging outdoors.
Do you do Bespoke Tide Clocks?
Yes, we do! Our artist can create a fully bespoke set of scenery and boats of your choosing to be inserted into a Tide Clock built just for you. You can find more details here.
Just like the Weather Clocks, we can also create Tide Clocks in bespoke colour frames. You can find further details here or contact us to discuss what it is you’re thinking of.
What is the process for Pre-ordering a new Tide Clock design?
When we produce new Tide Clock designs, we have to secure enough orders to meet the minimum threshold with our printers.
With this in mind, we offer Pre-ordering so that we can reach these miniumum quantities.
If we don't get enough Pre-orders then we won't move the artwork forward for printing and assembly at the workshop.
Therefore, there is usually a reward for anyone Pre-ordering soon after release. You can read more here.
What’s the process for Bespoke Colour Clocks?
If you place an order for a Bespoke Colour Clock, we’ll get in touch with you to ask which of the RAL coloursit is that you are hoping to have your bespoke frame powder coated in. We then contact our powder coaters to check that they are able to source the paint to achieve that. It’s rare that they can’t but, just occasionally, it’s a particularly expensive raw material in which case there might be an additional charge. Either way, we can always suggest similar alternatives that you could consider. If you’d like to know if the colour you have in mind is available, contact us here.
What's the process for Personalised Clocks?
We love making Personalised Clocks for our customers.
If you want to order a clock that has a Personalised Face or Personalised Plaque, you will need to 'Add to Cart':
- Your preferred type of Clock from the range
AND
- A Personalised Clock face OR Personalised Plaque
For Clocks with Personalised Faces, after receiving your order, we will contact you by email to learn what text you would like on your bespoke clock face (e.g. your family name, a special quote/date, Mr & Mrs etc.) We'll also send you a template to use to design your clock. You can play around with this to your heart's content and once you are happy, save the design and send it back to us. Upon receiving details of your idea, we will confirm the design with a proof and then submit the clock face for printing prior to bespoke assembly.
For Clocks with Personalised Plaques, after receiving your order, we will contact you by email to learn what you want the Plaque on the back of your clock to say.
We'll provide a template and you have the choice of providing just a typed message or a handwritten one that will then be transposed onto the Plaque.
We'll provide you with a proof before printing and bespoke assembly.
Whatever your choice, your clock will be incredibly special once finished!
What's the process for bespoke Tide Clocks?
If you order a bespoke Tide Clock, you can choose what location is depicted behind the rising and falling tide, as well as the two boats shown on the water. We can even include family and friends within the design and will work with you to make something incredibly special and unique to you.
After we receive your order, we will contact you via email to discuss the location and scenery you have in mind. You can then send us images (either your own or that you have found online) of the location you have in mind, the boats you would like featured and anything else you'd hope to include in the scenery. We can even use some artistic licence to piece together recognisable landmarks that are special to you. Perhaps you'd like your own boat featured, a paddleboarder, your dog or your local lighthouse.
Our artist then uses your images (and can also help source suitable images to work from on the internet) to create the artwork for your clock. We can share with you those designs in their early stages to ensure you are happy with things ahead of going to print.
The lead-time for creating a bespoke clock varies depending on how busy our artist, printers and workshop are but, as a rough guide, we'd suggest allowing around 10 weeks from the date of ordering. As always, if you have a deadline you're working to, we'd try our very best to meet that for you.

How quickly can I get my clock?
If you're in the UK, Regular-sized Weather and Tide Clocks are delivered in 1-2 working days with a fully tracked courier service. Orders placed before 2pm Monday-Friday are shipped that same day. Overseas deliveries are also sent on express services, fully tracked. See our shipping information page for more details.
For Giant Weather Clocks, the lead time is currently up to 4 weeks unless they are currently out of stock and the workshop is busy building another batch, ready for dispatch with our specialist couriers at the start of the new month.
Personalisation of all Regular or Giant clocks will add a reasonable amount of workshop time. Check our FAQ section on personalised clocks for more information.
Please contact us if you are yet to order or you have recently ordered but have any queries about the speed of your clock's arrival.
We will always do our best to meet a deadline for delivery if you have a special occasion that you need the clock by.
Can I track my delivery or modify my delivery address?
For Regular-sized Weather & Tide Clocks:
Yes, your clock will be delivered to you by trackable courier. You will receive an email notification with tracking information and delivery options when your clock has been dispatched.
For Giant Weather Clocks (that can only be shipped to Mainland UK only due to their delicate nature):
We use a specialist courier that collects from our workshop and delivers to your door without sending your clock via multiple storage and distribution warehouses where it could get damaged. They plan their delivery routes each week depending on what else they have to take around the country.
With this you get a more 'human' and friendly service than larger couriers can give you but there aren't any tracking numbers used. The couriers will contact you directly to suggest a day and time for a delivery at your address and can liaise with you (and your schedule!) We hope you'll enjoy the interaction compared to the usual national couriers.
Whatever size of clock you have ordered, if you would like an update on how soon you might be able to get your recently ordered clock (or need to advise us of changes to the delivery address) then you can get in touch using the link above and a member of the team will assist you.
What if I'm out when the clock is to be delivered?
For Regular-sized Weather Clock delivered by tracked courier:
Depending on your location and the courier company used to deliver your clock, there will be different redelivery or collection options. We recommend that you check this when you first receive the tracking information in your 'Dispatch Confirmation' email from us.
For Giant Weather Clocks delivered by our specialist courier:
The couriers will be in touch in advance of attempting delivery to discuss a suitable day and time to make a drop to your address. If, though, you are still not at home when the clock is delivered, they will contact you by phone to discuss what is best to do. You can always instruct them of a safe place or neighbour to deliver to if need be.

We have a strong commitment to secure e-commerce and reducing the possibility of fraud. With this in mind, we are sorry but we are unable to offer bank transfers as a way of paying for any Bramwell Brown product.
Can I buy a Gift Card or Voucher?
Yes, you can!
We offer various 'values' that can be purchased. They can be bought on their own or in multiples with amounts from £20 to £200 available.
Once purchased, the Gift Card code is emailed to you instantly and can then be forwarded on to the lucky individual receiving the gift or, perhaps, written down in a greetings card.
Are the clocks ever offered on discount or sale?
We price our clocks in a way we feel represents their long term value and British-made origin. With this in mind the only discounted clocks that we can offer are:
- £50 off (or other currency equivalent) any repeat purchase orders. (Click here to request a repeat purchase discount code.)
- £100 off (or other currency equivalent) two or more clocks purchased in the same checkout, with the same delivery address*. (Click here to request a discount code. *Excludes Re-Loved Weather Clocks.)
- 10% off any clock when you are celebrating your one year wedding anniversary (Click here to tell us your good news!)
- Our 'Re-loved' Weather Clocks which are available spontaneously after customer exchanges are received and processed.
Do you offer a a personaslised gift note or gift-wrapping service?
After leaving the workshop, our clocks are put in a warehouse prior to being picked off the shelf and sent on their way.
The warehouse is often cold and a bit dusty. So it's not a location where we are happy for our clocks to be fully opened up and have notes or wrapping added to them in a professional way.
With this in mind, we can't offer a wrapping service or a gift note service on orders that aren't being sent directly from the workshop. These would be clocks with:
- Personaslised Clock Faces and;
Both accessories are great ways to really add extra love to a clock order. And, of course, our team LOVE making them.
The internal packaging for all Bramwell Brown Clocks is also elegant and well presented. You may find that our own packaging is enough to create avid excitement!
Register your clock for a four-year warranty
Register your clock with us, and we’ll extend your Bramwell Brown warranty from two years to four years.
You’ll just need your clock's serial number, which you can find on the back, near the battery covers.
Moving or storing your clock
If you have a clock but need to transport it somewhere or store it for a while, we recommend a few things:
- Always turn the clock off (and remove the battery for the clock hands) when you take it down from the wall.
- Try to keep it stood up, as if it is still on the wall when inside a box, particularly if it is to be stored for a while. The clock can lie on its back but not for longer than just a very few days.
- Use the box it came in, or other packing that simply prevents heavy knocks or scratches.
- If your clock came with one inserted, don't ever try to reinsert the 'transport lock' pin that will have been removed when starting the clock for the very first time.
- Don't send the clocks in the post or they will most likely be badly damaged!
I've lost my instruction manual!

Is there a Bramwell Brown showroom or shop?
In 2018 we moved from Oxo Tower Wharf across the river to Somerset House and our new address is unfortunately not open to the public as we have no showroom space.
After consulting customers we felt that our previous single location at Oxo, with its limited hours required a better solution. We've therefore started to expand the number of 'exhibition clocks' we have around London. This means it's easier for people to see and experience our clocks closer to their own neighbourhood and the opening hours are less restrictive.
You can see the map of 'exhibition' clocks here!
And if you want to suggest a cafe or establishment for us to exhibit at then you can contact us here.
I have feedback and/or suggestions for Bramwell Brown
We love receiving feedback and suggestions from customers - it helps us constantly improve everything about our business. So whether its comments on your clock, our website, your overall experience or ideas for future products please do send us your thoughts. All feedback will get a personal reply from one of the team.
Do you have a Mailing List?
We do! Though we don't send emails very often because we know that's what people usually prefer. The circa-monthly newsletter includes new designs, weather trivia and experiments...
Can I speak to the team at Bramwell Brown on the phone?
As a small business, we can't offer a telephone enquiry service but, by contacting us via the website, we do guarantee you a swift and helpful response.
We also work hard to ensure this list of Frequently Asked Questions is up to date and provides as much helpful information as possible.
If you have a question you need answering and you feel it's not covered in in this FAQ list (with the applicable contact forms given in each answer also), then please do contact us here or use the chat function in the corner of your browser window.
Alternatively, if you need help with a clock you already own, please contact us or, again, use the chat function in the corner of this window.
Can I get a VAT invoice for my Clock?
Yes you can!
Please just get in touch here with your order number (the 4 digit number that will have been in your order confirmation email) and we'll generate one for you.
How do I set my Tide Clock to be most accurate?
The most accurate setting of your Tide Clock can be achieved by setting the clock to High Tide at full moon. To do so, make a note of when that is (using a local tide timetable or www.tide-forecast.com, for example) and, at that moment, switch your clock off and on again to trigger it to move to exactly High Tide at that exact time.
To fully enjoy your tide clock, we thoroughly recommend reading the section “How your Tide Clock works” in your instructional manual, if you haven’t done so already. This explains how the clock’s tide mechanism works to match the timings of the gravitational pull of the Moon as it orbits the Earth. Reading this section should help you to recognise that any tide clock will have its limitations because there are additional geographical factors at play that create your local tidal pattern each day and lunar month. Additionally, the clock (as any tide clock) works by timing the monthly average time between daily high and low tides (6 hours and 12½ minutes) but over the course of a month, there are slight fluctuations to the time between each tidal oscillation. There are therefore times in the month when your tide clock will more closely match the exact High/Low Tides in your location, and other times in the month when that match will be less close. If set at full moon, you can expect the accuracy to return at each and every full moon.
I’ve dropped my clock and it’s broken
Oh no! Don’t panic: contact us right away, and we’ll do our best to fix it for you. Here’s how:
1. Tell us what’s happened, and we’ll give you a rough estimate for the cost of repair, plus collection and redelivery by specialist courier
2. We’ll arrange a time for our specialist courier to collect the clock. We strongly discourage sending clocks in the post: they are delicate things.
3. Our workshop team will repair the clock, and arrange for delivery once it’s back up and running.

My clock says 'Rain' when it's bright sunshine outside
As explained in the instruction manual for your Weather Clock, your clock forecasts the weather from its little barometric sensor. The clock has no other senses or inputs to help it choose what weather scene to show.
The barometric air pressure sensor checks for rises and falls in pressure and then presents a mechanical weather scene that it thinks is best. So when a Weather Clock displays 'Rain' and there is good weather outside, it will be solely because it has measured a fall in atmospheric pressure.
This fall in pressure may be a long term trend (perhaps even taking several days to play out) or a small 'bump' in what has generally been steady and/or high barometric pressure. And this is one of the reasons why solely barometric forecasting has been usurped by more technical meteorology over the years. Your clock's movements can be somewhat unexpected or whimsical at times!
If you would like more information or help, please take a look at Help and Advice on Forecasting Accuracy.
The forecasts in my clock aren't changing
Often the clock can change forecast within the hour and then back again, if there is a snap change in air pressure.
However, periods of anti-cyclonic high pressure can also last for weeks on end, meaning the default forecast tends to be 'Fair'.

General business enquiries
We're always happy to hear from other businesses whose plans and motivations are aligned with our own. If you have products/services/ideas/opportunities you think we should know about then please do get in touch and we'll come back to you.
Do Bramwell Brown work with artists on new designs?
We would love to hear from any artist or designer who thinks their own styles would compliment the mechanics of our Weather Clocks. Any new designs would be part of our Limited Edition range.
You can read more and get in touch with us via this page.
We'll look forward to hearing from you!
Can I stock Bramwell Brown clocks?
We often prefer to sell our own clocks ourselves so that we can fully explain what they do and how they work to our happy customers. However, if you feel you have a great environment to hang our clocks in (cafes and public spaces most definitely included) then we'd love to hear from you.
Trade enquries outside of the UK
We welcome opportunities to export our clocks overseas and would be happy to talk you through the set up we have in place for overseas territories. Please contact us via trade and business enquiries from.
Recommend a Cafe or establishment where a Weather Clock could be exhibited
We are continuing to grow the number of clocks that we exhibit in Cafes, Pubs, Holiday Lets and other quality establishments.
This allows us to both let prospective customers see our Weather Clocks in the flesh prior to ordering online, but also let's the Bramwell Brown brand get "discovered" by anyone who spots them whilst enjoying their surroundings.
If you are the owner or manager of a location where a Bramwell Brown Clock could be proudly hung (free of charge to the establishment!) then please tell us here. We'd love to hear from you.
Do you offer marketing collaborations or sales commission?
We are happy to work with individuals or organisations who can refer genuine potential customers to us. We have a paid commission model set up with Shopify Collabs - a very easy to use platform.
If you are interested in earning commission from referrals then please do make an application via this page.
We look forward to hearing from you! 😊
