Hokusai Tide Art Clock

Hokusai’s 1831 masterpiece is reborn: our elliptical mechanics create the mesmerising illusion of this world-renowned seascape rising and falling beneath Mount Fuji.

Created in collaboration with the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, we have utilised high-fidelity imagery of this Edo-era print in their collection to create a functional work of art. A sister piece to our other ukiyo-e-inspired clock, the Hiroshige Weather Art Clock, each numbered and certified timepiece is being made to order at our Hampshire workshop this November.

"Particularly significant was the introduction of the new imported pigment Prussian Blue. Unlike earlier Japanese blues, which faded very quickly, this brilliant colour gave artists more freedom of expression, especially in the depiction of sky and water"

Highlights
  • First 25 only: Each of the first 25 Hokusai Tide Art Clocks ordered will include a complimentary, beautifully presented concertina book—Hokusai, 36 Views of Mount Fuji by Prestel Publishers. (This bonus offer ends when the first 25 units have sold.)
  • Own a Moving Masterpiece: Our collaboration with the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, brings Hokusai’s legendary Great Wave Off Kanagawa to life. This era-defining ukiyo-e print (first published in 1831) will become a treasured, kinetic piece of art on your wall.
  • Captivating Motion: Watch the infamous seascape literally rise and fall on your wall. Our mechanics track the next high or low tide throughout the day whilst also displaying a hypnotic full tide cycle at the push of a button.
  • Practical and Beautiful: More than art, this clock offers precise, real-time guidance to high and low tide. Perfect for coastal living wherever you are based, or perhaps just satisfying your yearning for the sea (below Mount Fuji or otherwise)!
  • Easy to Work: Just like our other Tide Art Clocks, no internet connections required or any complex set up - just set the clock at high tide for your preferred location, and off you go. Learn more here about our Tide Clocks.
  • A Good Size: The Tide Art Clock's frame measures 33cm diameter (13 inches) and 12.5cm deep (5 inches) – big enough to work as a single focal point in a room, small enough to sit alongside other wall art and furnishings.
  • Handmade in Britain: All our clocks are made with great affection at our workshop in Hampshire, England. Each piece is hand-numbered and certified, ensuring its provenance and future value.
  • And Made to Last: Reflecting our trust in our dedicated workshop team, every clock includes a one-year warranty (extendable to two years by registering). All our clocks are fully serviceable - if they ever need to be - to ensure they have a long and happy life in your home.

  • The Great Wave in Motion
Our custom mechanism animates Hokusai's famous wave, creating the mesmerising illusion of the tide rising and falling every 30 minutes. Like all Tide Clocks, it is set to work on a semi-diurnal timer of 12 hours 25 minutes and 15 seconds between high tides. To synchronize, simply set the clock to High Tide when your local coast is in flood.

  • Watch a Full Tidal Cycle
The ‘mechanically animated’ great wave can be demonstrated to friends and family at the push of the demonstration button on the clock – it will then complete an entire tidal loop.

  • Hand Assembled in Great Britain
All of our British-designed Tide Clocks are crafted by hand at our workshop in Hampshire, England. Each piece is hand-numbered and certified, reflecting delicate, skilled work.

  • Sustainable Design
We’ve designed the clock to work for many happy years in your home. It’s fully serviceable (if it ever needs to be) – with all the parts available in our workshop.

  • Easy to Hang (Indoors!)
A single screw in the wall can hold the clock and you get a nifty hanging guide in the box. This clock is for indoor use only – and please don't hang it within 50cm (20 inches) of a radiator. The delicate mechanics don’t enjoy direct heat.

  • A Note on Unusual Tide Patterns
Our Tide Clocks forecast the tide state on a semi-diurnal mechanism. They therefore time the twice daily rise and fall of a standard semi-diurnal tide, (as found in all of the United Kingdom, most of Europe and the East Coast of the USA) that results from the gravitational pull of the moon. If you are in a location not listed above or with a known unusual tide then you can read more here.
